May 6th has now been officially declared as the date of the next General Election.

Over the last two years I have been a serious political Candidate and campaigned hard during this time.
Visiting every area, holding regular coffee mornings and surgeries, canvassing and leading from the front.

The people of this region deserve to be heard and the weakness shown by those currently in office, to properly represent the people of the Highlands needs to come to an end.
My main motivation for standing is to ensure that real support is brought to the Highlands and the people of Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch and Strathspey. My desire to bring the high degree of support that a Conservative Government would bring and to do so it is imperative that this region elects me to represent them in Parliament.

Out of every other Candidate who is standing, only I will have the ability, as a member of the party in power to get the investment and infrastructure to ensure that the businesses and people of this region get the top support they deserve.
All the other Candidates will be in opposition and can only ask what they will of a Conservative Government.
I would remind everyone that I would be the MP of the party in power and it is that thought that I ask you to seriously consider.

This General Election is a clear choice. A vote for any other party will help to keen Gordon Brown in power.
Do you want Gordon Brown for another 5 years or David Cameron as Prime Minister?

I would ask that every person in this region look closely at what I can offer. It’s time to play this to your advantage and ensure this region gets the strongest support from a Conservative Government possible. If you have never voted Conservative before, you need to seriously consider doing so now.

I am not a career politican, I have worked hard all my life with a family business that I started from scratch 16 years ago.
If you invest your trust in me, you can be certain of having an honest and hard working MP who understands what you are all going through and who acknowledges that your concerns and interests are my concerns and interests.

It’s time for change and true representation for the people who live and work in this region.

Make your vote count – there is much at stake!

Jim Ferguson

The Conservatives have launched a poster as part of a wider campaign highlighting how Labour’s job tax will kill the recovery.

“Labour have confirmed today that they are going ahead with a national insurance tax rise on jobs that Britain’s business leaders say will endanger jobs”, said George Osborne, the Shadow Chancellor.

The Conservatives have also unveiled new research showing how National Insurance has become Labour’s favourite stealth tax:

Total receipts from National Insurance have risen over five times faster than income tax receipts over the last decade.

Average National Insurance Contributions (NICs) per family have risen over twelve times as much as average income tax receipts per family over the same period.

In that time Gordon Brown cut the basic rate of income tax once (as part of the 10p tax con) but he increased National Insurance rates in three different ways – and that’s even before Labour’s new tax on jobs planned for 2011

“With Gordon Brown now finally forced to call the election, the choice is clear”, Osborne added.

“Labour’s jobs tax and debt will stamp out the green shoots and kill the recovery. Conservative plans to cut wasteful government spending and stop the jobs tax will get Britain working.”

David Cameron described it as a “very important moment in the election campaign”.

The executive chairman of Marks and Spencers, Sir Stuart Rose, and easyJet entrepreneur Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou are among the 23 people to have signed the letter, which is published in the Daily Telegraph.

The signatories employ around half a million workers between them.

They agree with shadow chancellor George Osborne that increasing NI by 1p next April, as Labour plans to do, is bad news for the economy.

“The Government’s proposal to increase national insurance, placing an additional tax on jobs, comes at exactly the wrong time in the economic cycle,” the letter says.

The Labour Party feel that the Conservatives’ plan has not been properly costed and not properly thought through.

Sky’s political correspondent Joey Jones

“In a personal capacity, we welcome George Osborne’s plan to stop the proposed increase in national insurance by cutting Government waste.”

Mr Cameron told BBC Breakfast: “These household names – people like Marks & Spencer, Sainsbury’s and Mothercare – are saying that Labour’s plans to put up National Insurance contributions are the biggest threat to the recovery.

“They are saying there is no threat to the recovery from cutting waste in 2010 but there is a threat to the recovery from putting up National Insurance contributions.

George Osborne

“Labour have said the whole thing is that we can secure the recovery. Well, today that plank of their whole approach has been removed.”

Chancellor Alistair Darling pledged to introduce the rise as a way of paying off some of the nation’s debts.

But Mr Osborne said he would axe the increase for people earning less than £45,000 if his party wins power at the next election. He said he would pay for this by finding efficiency savings worth £12bn.

Mr Darling counters that Mr Osborne’s policy is at odds with the Conservatives’ claim they would cut the deficit sooner and deeper than the Government plans.

Treasury Chief Secretary Liam Byrne said the Conservatives were not able to fund their promise on NI.

“No business goes to its shareholders with unfunded promises – but that’s exactly what the Tories are doing,” he said.

The captains of industry and top business leaders are fully aware of the failure of this Labour Government. They are giving their full backing to the Conservatives, because they know we have the experience and common sense, to get rid of Labour’s crippling debt, but not at the expense of putting more businesses out of action, or risking the creation of new jobs.

Members of the public whose jobs are hanging by a thread need to take note and ensure their vote is for the Conservatives. Another term of Labour could spell disaster for them and everyone else in the United Kingdom.

The PM’s speech was correct but his podcast was not, the letter says

Mr Brown “did not use comparable” sets of data when he discussed the number of people who had come to Britain in recent years, the note the chair of the UK Statistics Authority said.

A statement from Downing Street said it accepted some of the numbers used were unclear and not strictly comparable.

The Prime Minister used the podcast to talk about his points system and reassure working families that the system is fair.

“Some people talk as if net inward migration is rising. In fact, it is falling – down from 237,000 in 2007, to 163,000 in 2008, to provisional figures of 147,000 last year,” he said.

“Some people talk as if all immigrants stay here forever. In fact, most come for short periods and then return to their own country.”

But the chair of the statistics authority, Sir Michael Scholar, said the figure for 2007 should have been lower – the official number was 233,000, not 237,000.

It means the scale of the fall is less dramatic than Mr Brown implied.

There is an urgent need for immediate steps to properly control immigration instead of the free for all flood of migrants some with no skills and many who cant even speak English.

Labour systematically ignored the warnings just to rub the rights nose in it and in the hope of getting more votes. They betrayed the interests of Britain and the British people and now growing pressure mounts on all major frontline services with education, healthcare and the prisons bursting under the strain of an endless flood of people invited into the UK by Labour.

Labour lied to us all.

Previously unpublished papers reveal the true scope of Labour’s dependency on union cash.

Following Conservative pressure, the Government will publish the previously confidential minutes and papers of the Inter-Party Talks on the Funding of Political Parties.

Francis Maude, Shadow Minister for the Cabinet Office, led the Conservative delegation in the Talks. “Gordon Brown wrecked the opportunity to clean up politics because he wanted the unions’ votes to become Labour Party leader”, he said. “These documents expose the Labour Party’s addiction to union cash”.

The Talks were chaired by Sir Hayden Phillips and were suspended without substantive agreement in October 2007.

Peter Watt, then Labour General Secretary and a delegate on the Talks, has subsequently written how the Talks failed since “the Labour Party could not resolve its internal issues”, “my own party was the biggest block to reform” and Gordon Brown “repeatedly warned the Prime Minister [Tony Blair] that he would block any attempt to reduce the unions’ power.”

Peter Watt also notes how the Liberal Democrats were bought off by Labour: “[Labour] managed to clinch a deal with the LibDems by promising that Menzies (Ming) Campbell would get a taxpayer-funded car and driver if the reforms went through.”

The newly published papers today reveal the true extent of the union funding of the Labour Party:

Many union members would not pay a political levy to the Labour Party if given a choice.

Some trade unions affiliate more individuals to the Labour Party than they have union members paying a political levy (only money from the political levy can be used for political purposes).

From 2001 to 2006, the unions gave the Labour Party £45 million in cash.

Trade unions pay £1 million a year to the Labour Party at a local and regional level, tying in local Labour Party branches through binding “Constituency Development Plans”.

Sir Hayden Phillips drew up detailed option papers on how the political levy could be reformed to give union members genuine choice. The Labour Party objected to these proposals. This was the key stumbling block that led to the Talks failing.

It’s wrong that union barons, not rank-and-file union members, decide how much to give to Labour”, Maude added.

“A Conservative Government will seek an agreed long-term settlement that would introduce an across-the-board cap on donations to end the big donor culture. As part of that reform, union members must have real choice on whether they want to pay a political levy and where it goes.”

Interesting to see how easy it was to buy off the Libdems. I suppose some things never change.

David Cameron responds to Labour’s empty Budget

Wednesday, March 24 2010

David Cameron has responded in the House of Commons to the Chancellor’s presentation of the last Budget before the general election.

He said Labour “have made a complete mess of the British economy and they are totally failing to clean it up”.

Cameron set out the big argument in British politics: Labour say “don’t do anything before the election, let’s just sit tight and keep our fingers crossed”, and the Conservatives say “we need real action to get our economy moving – and urgently”.

Highlighting new policies that copied existing Conservative proposals, such as the stamp duty cut and new university places, he said the “only new ideas in British politics are coming from this side of the House” and that “the only thing Labour bring are debt, waste and taxes”.

The figures that stands out above any other, he said, was that Labour have “doubled the national debt, and they’re going to double it again”.

Outlining the Government’s failure Cameron criticised “all those schemes that they launched with great fanfare” for failing to help enough people. He also drew comparisons on the state of the economy when Labour came to power to the present – including the huge increase in the debt and deficit, and a falling down the global league tables in terms of competitiveness, tax and regulation.

We need a credible plan to deal with Britain’s record debts”, he said, criticising the Chancellor’s repeated hope to halve the deficit by 2014 as giving us a deficit “almost as big as when Denis Healey went to the IMF in the 1970s”.

Moving on to the delay in dealing with the deficit, he said “the risk to recovery is not in dealing with the deficit now, it’s in not dealing with the deficit now”. Cameron said that “every family knows that when your debts mount up, you need to start paying them off or things will only get worse”, and that it is time for the Government to learn the same lessons”.

“The Prime Minister and Chancellor faced a choice – between bold action in an election year or playing politics. Once again, they chose politics.”

Cameron also emphasised the need “to show the world that we are back open for business”, saying that because Labour “flunked the difficult decisions on spending, they are raising tax after tax after tax – all after the election”. “These are the ticking tax bombshells timed to go off the day after the election and that will destroy our recovery.”

He said that the greatest risk to Britain’s economic recovery was another Labour government. “No one has yet thought of a question to which the answer is five more years of this Prime Minister”, he said.

“We need a credible plan to cut the deficit. We need an unleashing of enterprise across the nation. We need a plan to boost employment through radical welfare and school reform. If ever there was a time when this country needed a radical change of direction it is now.”

He concluded that Britain needs a Conservative government “to clean up the mess made by this Labour Government”.

“Britain needs new energy, leadership and values to get this country moving again. That’s the argument we’ll take to the country the moment the Prime Minister has been forced by the law of the land to call the election he has avoided for so long.”

Mr Brown told Sir John Chilcot’s panel that the defence budget had risen “in real terms every year”.

But House of Commons reseach shows Mr Brown’s claim was wrong, and he has now written to Sir John to correct it.

Mr Brown was asked by the Inquiry if he was aware senior figures from the Ministry of Defence (MoD) said they were concerned that the 1998 strategic defence review had not been fully funded.

The PM said that the Treasury had agreed spending with the MoD for 2002, 2004 and 2007.

“The Iraqi expenditure was being met, but at the same time the defence budget was rising in real terms every year,” he said.

Repeating his claim, he told them: “The spending review of 2004 gave the Ministry of Defence a rising level of real spending, moving from 1.2% to 1.4% in real terms each year.”

But a research note prepared by the House of Commons Library in October last year showed defence expenditure had fallen in real terms in four financial years since Labour came to power in 1997: 1997/98 (-2.2%); 1999/2000 (-0.4%); 2004/5 (-0.7%); and 2006/7 (-0.1%).

In real terms it is 12% higher, but I do accept that in one or two years defence expenditure did not rise in real terms.

Gordon Brown

The average annual increase between 1997 and 2009 was 2.7%, it said, but noted that “this figure is likely to have been distorted by current operations”.

Asked at Prime Minister’s Questions whether he would correct the record, Mr Brown said: “Yes. I am already writing to Sir John Chilcot about this issue.

“Because of operational fluctuations in the way the money is spent, expenditure has risen in cash terms every year, in real terms it is 12% higher, but I do accept that in one or two years defence expenditure did not rise in real terms.”

The Prime Minister’s evidence to the Inquiry sparked condemnation from senior military figures.

Lord Boyce – who was the head of the military at the time of the invasion – called him “disingenuous” and insisted the MoD was starved of funds.

“He’s dissembling, he’s being disingenuous,” Admiral Boyce told The Times newspaper.

“It’s just not the case that the Ministry of Defence was given everything it needed

“There may have been a 1.5% increase in the defence budget but the MoD was starved of funds.”

Lord Boyce’s predecessor Lord Guthrie accused Mr Brown of costing soldiers their lives by failing to fund the army properly.

The Tories described Mr Brown’s admission as a “humiliating climbdown”.

Shadow defence secretary Liam Fox said: “He has made repeated and fundamentally false claims, misleading Parliament, the public and worst of all the Armed Forces and their families.”

A spokesman for the Prime Minister said Mr Brown had “taken the first opportunity” to tell MPs about the mistake.

Incredible.

EU rules are fatal for terror watchlist

Shadow Security Minister Baroness Neville-Jones has pointed out that EU rules will make the Government’s proposed terror watchlists ineffective.

In response to the failed attack on an airliner heading for Detroit on Christmas Day 2009, the Government announced that it would use the existing Home Office Watchlist as the basis for two new lists.

There was to be a no-fly list, and a larger list of those who should be subject to special measures prior to boarding flights bound for the UK (including transit/transfer passengers).

However, the European Commission says the UK cannot compulsorily collect Advance Passenger Information (API) for flights from within the EU under the e-Borders scheme, regardless of the nationality of the passenger.

And as the British Government has decided to also not collect and use Passenger Name Record information (PNR) for intra-EU flights, this means that Britain currently has no way of collecting advance information on all travellers arriving from within the EU.

The Detroit bomber flew from Nigeria to Holland and then on to America. If he’d travelled through Britain he might well not have been picked up by the new watchlist.

Speaking about the issue in a speech at the Royal United Services Institute, Neville-Jones said that Labour are “knowingly and inexcusably misleading the public into thinking that they are creating a system which will be an effective barrier to dangerous people being able to get on to a flight to the UK”.

“The flimsy basis of the new watch list will provide no such protection”, she added.

Pope could give Labour Party ‘hell’

catholic leader responds to Jim Murphy’s speech appealing for religious voters’ support

By Katrine Bussey

The Pope could give Labour “hell” over its record on family matters, the leader of the Catholic Church in Scotland said yesterday.

Cardinal Keith O’Brien hit out in the wake of a speech by Scottish Secretary Jim Murphy in which he attempted to appeal to religious voters.

Cardinal O’Brien accused the government of making “a systematic and unrelenting attack on family values”.

With Pope Benedict XVI due to visit Scotland later this year, the churchman revealed he had told Labour Holyrood leader Iain Gray that “he could really give you hell for what you have done in our country over the past 10 years”.

Cardinal O’Brien has criticised government policies on stem cell experimentation on human embryos, civil partnerships, same-sex adoption and abortion.

He said: “There’s a whole series of measures which have been legislated for over the past 10 years which are against basic Christian standards.

“I feel on behalf of my own Church and peoples of other faiths as well, that I am entering into this daily contest, fighting for the standards by which we stand as Christians here.”

Cardinal O’Brien said he had met the Pope in Rome recently and also said he had spoken to Mr Gray about the pontiff’s visit to Scotland.

He said the Labour Party had “accepted some praise” for playing a role in attracting the Pope to Scotland.

Cardinal O’Brien continued: “I said to Iain Gray ‘when the Pope does come I hope he emphasises to you the Christian teaching when he’s here, that’s what John Paul II did when he was here’.

“And in some ways I said to him he could really give you hell for what you have done in our country over the past 10 years, demeaning family and married life and these other things that have been happening over the past 10 years.”

Mr Murphy said on Tuesday night that “faith has always been important to Labour”.

The Scottish secretary, who was delivering the Progress lecture, stated: “In the US, faith has long played a central part in politics.

“Not surprising for a country where 60% of people say that God plays an important part in their lives.

“But it’s wrong to think that it plays no role in British politics.”

Mr Murphy, a Catholic, added research from the time of the 2005 general election suggested Labour support was strongest among religious people.

The Pope was invited to the UK by Prime Minister Gordon Brown during a private audience, and earlier this month the Catholic Church confirmed Scotland would be included in the visit which is expected to take place in the autumn.

Pope Benedict XVI’s visit will be the first since predecessor John Paul II’s visit in 1982.

Gordon Brown has denied ordering any briefing against his chancellor, after Alistair Darling said “the forces of hell” had been unleashed against him.

Mr Darling said No 10 and the Tories had given him “a weekend you could have done without” after he had forecast the worst recession for 60 years, in 2008.

But Mr Darling rejected suggestions he had been bullied by the prime minister.

And Mr Brown told GMTV he “would never instruct anybody to do anything other than support my chancellor”.

The PM, who again denied allegations of bullying, said he and Mr Darling and their families had been friends for 20 years and had “huge mutual respect”.

Mr Brown was speaking on Wednesday morning after Mr Darling’s comments in a Sky News interview on Tuesday evening.

A Conservative spokesman said: “The idea that Gordon Brown runs a happy and united team has been blown apart.

“This is amazing public confirmation from the prime minister’s own chancellor that he ordered his henchmen to brief against him.”

‘Still here’

In August 2008, Mr Darling caused a political uproar when he said economic conditions were “arguably the worst they’ve been in 60 years”.

Following this, there were media reports that 10 Downing Street was unhappy with his analysis and his handling of the economy.

There were also suggestions Mr Darling might be reshuffled to make way for Ed Balls, the Schools Secretary and a close ally of Mr Brown.

Questioned by Sky News about the response to his comments, Mr Darling said that “the forces of hell were unleashed”.

And asked whether that had been orchestrated by 10 Downing Street, he said: “The Tories as well. It was a weekend you could have done without.

“I do not know why the briefers did what they did. One day maybe they will explain.

“What I do know is, unfortunately and it’s not a great source of pleasure, but what I said did turn out to be true.”

In an apparent reference to Mr Brown’s former spin doctor Damian McBride, the chancellor added: “Frankly, my best answer for them is, I’m still here, one of them is not.”

Mr McBride was forced to resign last year after a planned smear campaign against senior Conservatives emerged in leaked e-mails he had written.

‘Robust exchanges’

Asked about Mr Darling’s suggestions of a briefing campaign, the PM said: “I was never part of anything to do with this. Look, this was the most amazing time… and lots of things were happening in this time.

“But I would never instruct anybody to do anything other than support my chancellor, and I think Alistair will confirm that.”

Darling speaking about the economy in August 2008

Mr Darling rejected suggestions he had ever been bullied by Mr Brown, but said: “Of course, Gordon and I have some very robust exchanges.

“I can’t imagine any healthy relationship between a prime minister and a chancellor where they don’t have differences from time to time.”

He admitted there had been “some bad days” in his relationship with the prime minister but insisted there was more that united the two men than would “ever divide us”.

Mr Brown was also asked again whether he had bullied anyone: “No. I get angry sometimes, doesn’t everybody? I get impatient. I’m driven to do the things.

“Actually, we work in an open plan office, we’re a sort of family in Downing Street and like every family there’s issues that come from time to time, but we’ve got a great working environment and we get things done.”

Schools Secretary Ed Balls also told the BBC he did not “recognise this atmosphere” of alleged bullying at Number 10.

“Jeremy Heywood, who is the top civil servant, said the opposite was true – it was a friendly, caring, supportive environment. I think he is right,” Mr Balls said.

Mr Darling’s comments follow allegations in political journalist Andrew Rawnsley’s book that Mr McBride and Charlie Whelan, another Brown supporter, had been behind the briefing.

Both Mr McBride and Mr Whelan, a senior official with the Unite union, had their names put to the chancellor in the Sky News interview, but he did not refer to either directly.

I dont think there can be any doubt that Brown piled on the pressure to Darling when he came clean about the state of the economy. It seems that Brown the Bully and his past are indeed catching up with him and as they say the truth will be out.

If Brown was masterminding a campaign to undermine his own chancellor then what chance does the country have with such a divided and war torn Labour party savaging each other in such a bad tempered and aggressive way.

The sooner this discredited Labour Government is booted out of office the better.
