Show site move hailed a success
By THE SCOTTISH FARMER
OUT OF town and into the country was the story from Nairn Show last weekend, after it vacated its town centre home for the first time in 80 years for a new experimental site at nearby Auldearn.
The event benefited enormously from the change, with the 23-acre site at Kinnundie Farm giving the organisers many more options that they had at the previous eight-acre home, in Nairn town centre.
Nairnshire Farming Society president, Ian Wilson, said it was too soon to say if the move out of Nairn would be permanent, although he conceded the day at Kinnundie had far exceeded expectations. Many thought the event had a record crowd, but Mr Wilson was unwilling to confirm this until the treasurer had banked the gate cash and completed their sums.
The new site meant a new lay-out. The reception from livestock exhibitors was generally good, although several said the sheep area was remote from the rest of the show and prevented enthusiasts from watching the judging of sheep and cattle easily. The biggest cheer from exhibitors was that they were able for the first time to park their floats, jeeps and trailers near the judging areas.
Champion of champions was the Clydesdale, Bellfield Bonnie May, a four-year-old yeld mare by Moorfield Edward and out of Hillmoor Midnight Melanie, from Calum Mackay, of 13 Bellfield Park, Inverness. The contest – judged by 89-year-old former show committee member Andrew Duncan, who was chalking up his 50th Nairn Show – also included the sheep supreme from David Walker, of Galcantray, Nairn, and the cattle inter-breed from Andrew Anderson, of Smallburn Farms, Mayne, Elgin.
Mr Duncan, of Sunnyside, Nairn, said: “I just could not go past the Clydesdale. All three of them were excellent, but the Clydesdale stood out.

Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch and Strathspey Conservative Association exhibited at the Grantown on Spey show in the Highlands of Scotland this summer and met local farmers, residents, and business owners.
Conservative Party Prospective Candidate Jim Ferguson, and Cllr Douglas Ross attended the show together with other conservative association members manning the stand and were available to answer questions and help with any problems or suggestions attendees wanted to discuss.
The conditions were perfect for the day with virtually continuous sunshine and it was really pleasing to meet so many people sympathetic to the party cause and interested in what was happening behind the scenes in the world of politics.
Many thanks for visiting
Great to meet you all
